Life Hack

“A strategy or technique adopted in order to manage one’s time and daily activities in a more efficient way.”

When it comes to organizing your stuff, the best life hack advise out there is, first get rid of things you don’t need or use or enjoy.

It’s that simple.

You will be amazed with the results.

Does It Bring Joy?

Told you so!

Marie Kondo’s “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,”

People everywhere in this community are talking about this “new idea”.

Through out this blog we repeat:

Do you need it?

Do you use it?

Do you enjoy it?

She even made it more simple. Does it bring you joy? If not, you know what to do.

Here is the fun part. Those that are trying this are discovering that it brings such freedom.

How is that for being simple?

Surrounded By A Sea Of Stuff

If you are feeling like you are drowning in a sea of stuff then maybe it’s time to get organized. And when I say get organized, well…. that means get rid of the things that you don’t use, need or enjoy.

Keeping things because you might need or use never works out. It will just collect dust and you will trip over those things and bump your head. Trust me. I’ve been there many times.

It’s amazing how much stuff we have and it continues to grow.

Nearing the end of summer is a good time to start looking around. Remember, most companies that pick up trash will also have a curb side program to pick up large items.

Many cities now have a program to dispose of paints, batteries etc..

There is simply no excuse. Stop being frustrated and get started. You will feel so much better!

Wow! How true this is!

What To Do With Plastic Closet Organizing Shelves?

These white plastic shelves are a good idea for some closets. Especially if you don’t have dresser drawers. It’s easy to see what your looking for and are designed to air out whatever it’s holding. All of the closet holders, hangers, shelves, hooks and anything else that helps organize a closet is a good idea.

However….they can be traps. Somehow the picture in the store never looks like what our own closets look like. That is because we have way more stuff in our closets than the advertisement does. These were used around the house in different areas but at some point I realized what they were holding wasn’t being used. The answer for me was to get rid of the contents and the white plastic shelves.

What To Do With Placemats?

These things come in handy and do protect furniture. For years we had placemats that were maps. Kids can learn a lot while eating their cereal. They make great gifts, can decorate a table and are useful. But it’s time. I have not used many of my placemats in years. Time to donate.Placemats

What To Do With The Green Turtle Sand Box?

This green turtle full of sand gave us many hours of fun, playing in the sun. We did notice the neighborhood cat sniffing around it and sure enough that cat left little surprises behind. Green Turtle was cleaned out more than once and at some point just wasn’t being used.

Year after year I see these things for sale at local stores. If you keep this around your yard, make sure and use the cover when not using or you too may have some extra surprises the next morning from the cat. Spiders like these kinds of toys so make sure and check for spiders as well. Hopefully someone else is enjoying the Green Turtle.

It finally sold in a garage sale!

What To Do With Homemade Binaculars?

My grandson made these and we did actually play with them for a couple of days. Think of all of the homemade gifts you will receive during your lifetime from kids and grandkids. Keeping everything would be a recipe for insanity. There is no shame in using things for a season or for a couple of days and then trashing or recycling.

Closet Hanger Organizers

I fell for it too! Thinking I could buy these and it would automatically make me organized. It worked at first but then I realized the things I hung on the lower bars were pants I never wore. I’m not saying don’t buy but think before buying. These things are made to utilize space efficiently. If you are that short on space maybe it’s time to rethink your wardrobe. If you haven’t worn for a year then sell or donate. If that is too drastic then try 2 years or 3 years.Closet hanger organizers

Before And After Bookcase

Bookcase Before

This last weekend a friend and I were busy organizing. The catch all area for them was their bookcase. They estimated  the mess in their office has caused them to spend hours looking for the documents needed for a tax return.

Frustration and blame does not make for a happy home. The only way there would be success was for them to accept they needed to declutter.

The big problem for students and teachers is they may again use one of those books for reference. Getting rid of a book doesn’t mean it goes out of existence.

Donate to the library!

Let the library store it for you. If you can’t find that lost book then the library can check out other libraries and have it sent to yours.

We started by taking everything out and giving it a good clean. Then one by one, only putting back the books they needed and used. We also did the rest of the office. Lots of paper, junk mail, souvenirs, and everything in between.

Like items with like items. This will save you hours of searching.
